The Main Science and Technology Indicators database contains 151 main data series selected from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Scientific and Technological Indicators database for 30 OECD member countries and nine non-member countries. The majority of these series provide information on research and experimental development resources, with additional series providing measures of output and the impact of scientific and technological activities. A number of economic series are also included to calculate indicators such as growth rates at fixed prices, research and development expenditures as a percentage of GDP or industrial value added, and series to convert data into a common currency using comparisons at purchasing power parities.
These data were first provided by the UK Data Service in March 2004. The UK Data Service web site includes further information on its OECD Main Science and Technology Indicators holdings, including a dataset user guide and details of latest database updates.

This database, published twice a year, provides a set of indicators that reflect the level and structure of the efforts undertaken by OECD Member countries and selected non-member economies in the field of Science and Technology as available from 1981 onwards. It includes final or provisional results as well as forecasts established by government authorities. Indicators cover resources devoted to research and development, patent families, technology balance of payments and international trade in highly R and D-intensive industries. Also presented are the underlying economic series used to calculate these indicators.
Indicators on R and D expenditures, budgets and personnel are derived from the OECD Research and Development Statistics (RDS) database, which is based on the data reported to OECD and Eurostat in the framework of the joint OECD-Eurostat international data collection on resources devoted to R and D.
The sources for the other indicators include the OECD databases on Activities of Foreign Affiliates (AFA), on Bilateral Trade in Goods by Industry and End-use Category database (BTDIxE), on Patents and on Technological Balance of Payments (TBP).
